I'm still learning so much about outdoor gardening and the rules of the weather. "Plant annuals after Mother's Day, early spring bulbs should be planted in the fall, start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost", etc. I am beyond excited for Spring and can hardly contain my excitement! I also like to do things a bit unorthodox compared to the other experienced gardeners.
I like to learn as I go while doing things as inexpensively as possible. I am from Hampstead, Maryland, and one of my favorite places to go for early spring bulbs is Bowmans Home & Garden (which will be changing names soon to Sweet Bay Farms). I like to get my bulbs a little late when they are all 75% off. I spent about $50 and got over 100+ bulbs of Tulips, Allium, Hyacinthus, Muscari, Snow Crop, and Daffodils. I got a variety of different Tulips in shades of pink and purple which are my favorite colors in the garden.
I planted most of these bulbs in the ground already in the front beds of my parents house. Some of them are coming up to my surprise! So far, we have had a very mild winter here in Maryland, so I was able to get away with this premature planting. I did save a few bulbs to force indoors so I can add a pop of color to my room and to satisfy my urge to grow something. They are coming up nicely but no blooms yet.
I absolutely love the early spring weather. It's my favorite season of the whole year. I was born 3 days after the Spring Equinox, so this season holds a special place in my heart and soul. There is something so magical about the colorful dainty blooms emerging through snow and frost. These tiny plants seems to defy the rules of nature itself, yet here they are.
Some of my favorite cold hardy, early spring flowers include: Pansies, Violas, Primroses, Daffodils, Tete-a-Tetes, Hellebores, Hyacinths, Muscari, Tulips, Snow Crops & Crocus, Allium, Sweat Peas, Snap Dragons, Bleeding Hearts, Lilacs, Magnolias, Foxglove, and so many more. I can't say I dislike any early spring flower. The vibrant colors after a dull winter is so rewarding and energizing. I can't wait for more blooms to come!
Pictured Left to Right are my lower bed gardens where this purple colored Hellborous has started to emerge, Hyacinth planted from last season, another Hellborous cluster, a tulip, an early spring arrangement from work, the bulbs I bought from Bowmans Home & Garden on sale, and the last 3 pictures are from last year Spring 2022 in the greenhouse.
