People often ask me if owning plants is an expensive hobby, and my response is usually “it depends”. It's easy to get sucked into the obsession of buying plants. Plants are like potato chips, you can't just have one…. So yes, my hobby does get expensive at times. There is a way to own all of your plants and not spend a penny on a plant ever! All it takes is a little patience and research.
Reaching Out to Friends
If you like plants, chances are you have a friend or neighbor who does too. Share cuttings with friends and propagate! This is the easiest and cheapest way to make more plants for no cost at all! For propagation tips and tricks see our blog on Propagation 101. A quick plant swap is always a fun way to add to your collection. If you don't have a plant to give, odds are there are people who are willing to give you a plant they don't want anymore.
Rescuing Plants
There are lots of plants in search of a new home. Just like adopting pets, you can adopt your plants too! Many big box stores throw out plants that look wilted or not as pretty as when they first got them. Places like Home Depot, Lowes, and the Walmart Garden Center do this a lot. Next time you shop in your local big box store, ask an associate if there are any plants they are getting rid of. Most of the time they will give it to you for free or a discounted price! Another place to browse for free plants is Facebook Marketplace. Join an online plant community in your area because many people will post pictures of plants they no longer want. Sometimes it’s because they are moving, have too many, or simply don't want that plant anymore. When all else fails, go dig up a clump of weeds from your backyard and put it in your windowsill (there's no such thing as weeds in my opinion, all plants are meant to be here). And there you go, free plants!
